Smile, Be Happy

I was out engaging in a bit of window shopping the other day and I saw what I would describe as a heavily battered man. One of his arms was in sling, he had a visible back brace, he was walking with the aid of a crutch and one of his eyes was covered by an eye patch. I didn't want to make eye contact with him 'cos I understand how a person in such conditions would not particularly revel in being stared at by everyone, everywhere he went. However, I did a bit of 'amebo' and listened to the things he said. He's just recently returned from Afghanistan. As he reeled the list of everything he's going through, (The things I've listed above + Internal bleeding and having to take morphine everyday) the Shop Assistant replied "And you're still smiling?". He said "One doesn't have a choice really. You get up and keep things moving. You can't be feeling sorry for yourself."

It made me smile and feel a bit daft for getting irritated over silly things like being outbid on Ebay or my house mates not re filling the kettle after use. It also made me realize that perhaps I should smile more often. I'm lucky in so many regards and I don't show enough gratitude or positivity to justify it.

Smile, Be Happy.

And I apologize if this sounds really clichéd. Don't let it detract from the real purpose.
