The Cool/Power List- m- man of the people- Tobenna Ofili

man of the people- a man who represents, understands and caters to the needs of ordinary people.

Everyone knows Tobenna's voice. They know the amount of talent you possess. However, I doubt they know your story? How/When did you decide Music was the thing for you? What's the struggle been like thus far?

The struggle hasn't been so easy especially when you’re sort of, out there on your own. Lucky for me I wasn't the only person starting off at this position. Music wasn’t really that much of my thing but I wanted to make it my thing. When you want to do something, you put your head to it and the motivation sets you on a path. Luckily, mine was the right one and with a strong team there's no turning back.

Is there anyone you model your music style after? Who are your biggest sources of inspiration and in what ways do they inspire you?
I'm always trying to do something new with my music and although I might be just a kid, I try to put myself ahead of the pack (all the industry guys so far). Determination inspires me not other people’s music.

One thing I’m always interested in knowing about my peers who are into making music is if they play their music for their parents. If yes, what do they think, where do they stand?
Parents are a big deal. You have to have their support. They don't hear everything but they hear the parent friendly tracks. I obviously won't say no when they ask for it all. In fact my mum has all my tracks now. She gets them before they are released.

When making music, who do you keep in mind? Who's the music targeted at?
Wow! I never really keep that in mind, it’s usually just a case of what I'm feeling and usually there's some that is part of the team there like Fresh L, Phlowz, Stan, Feat, Ore anyone and they all have an ear for music. I base it all on my opinion because I'm making music for myself because I love what I'm doing. Many people know good music when they hear it, to some its mine, to others it isn't.

The Music Industry is like the Royal Rumble; 'Survival of the Fittest'. Of the present crop is there anyone who you'll say has made you step your game up? Or is there anyone outside your DRB crew you perceive in high light?
My crew is very big and it extends way beyond DRB at least the DRB that you all know. But HKN is definitely up there and some youngsters that you have to watch out for like Teflon too are there. The kid has mad potential from the new stuff I've heard.

I've had conversations with a significant number of people; the consensus view is that you're one of the best to do it. What does it mean to you to be tagged 'the man of the people'?

Wow! That's always encouraging. To me it’s just a driving force to actually do it. I haven't achieved much yet so I'm not willing to let anyone down so I’ll keep pushing.

DRB are taking the game to the next level. Shooting videos and all, what's next? What's the priority and what can we expect from you in the future?
All that is a secret you'll just have to wait and see. We are working on some new tracks at the moment and as usual you can expect it to be better than the last batch. I think big; we think big and we’re willing to do what it takes to get there.

It’s been a pleasure talking to you. Thanks.

The best is yet to come. Thanks a lot.
