Verse of the Year
Drake in "Forever"
Eminem in "Forever"
Kanye West in "Run This Town"
Lil Wayne in "Roger That"
Nicki Minaj in "My Chick Bad"
Rick Ross in "Angels (Remix)"
Verdict: Eminem's "Forever " verse is rated highly by most people for a reason I'm still trying to decipher. I like Drake's best but the ManYe in me would go for Kanye West's work on "Run This Town" although I'm not very confident on it winning.
Club Banger of The Year
DJ Khaled "All I Do Is Win"
Fast Life Youngstaz "Swag Surfin"
Gucci Mane f/ Plies "Wasted"
Lloyd Banks f/ Juelz Santana "Beamer, Benz or Bentley"
Waka Flocka Flame "O Let's Do It"
Roscoe Dash "All The Way Turnt Up"
Verdict: Every nominee has an equal chance of winning(No, I'm not speaking probability wise) . This is one of the toughest categories. Sticking my neck out, I would go for Khaled's "All I Do Is Win".
Remix of the Year
Birdman f/ Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy "Always Strapped" (Remix)
Diddy-Dirty Money f/ Rick Ross "Angels" (Remix)
Diddy–Dirty Money f/ Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross "Hello, Good Morning" (Remix)
Gyptian f/ Nicki Minaj "Hold Yuh" (Remix)
Waka Flocka Flame f/ Diddy, Rick Ross "O Let's Do It" (Remix)
Yo Gotti f/ Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj, Trina "5 Star Chick" (Remix)
Verdict: The Track whores by the names of Diddy, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj are the most common occurrences on this list. Meaning, they go hard on their features. (Question marks on Diddy but he gets top marks for effort). Wouldn't it be appropriate that the song they all feature on comes out smiling. Thus, I'm going with the "Hello, Good Morning" (Remix) to win.
B.o.B f/ Bruno Mars "Nothin' On You"
Drake "Best I Ever Had"
Drake, Eminem, Kanye West, Lil Wayne "Forever"
Jay Electronica "Exhibit C"
Verdict: One part of me really wants "Nothin' On You" to win as it served as a welcome note from two artistes who shall go on to become Hip Hop legends provided they stay grounded and create music as powerful as they've done thus far. Jay Z's "D.O.A" fits the bill as it shall be remembered as the tune which served the death knell on Auto tune. " Forever" could also win when one considers the magnitude of the artistes involved.
Mixtape of The Year
Fabolous "There Is No Competition 2"
Gucci Mane "The Burrprint: The Movie 3-D"
Jadakiss "The Champ Is Here 3"
Lil Wayne "No Ceilings"
Wiz Khalifa "Kush And OJ"
Young Jeezy "Trap Or Die 2"
Verdict: Different strokes for different folks. The stoners would pick Kush and OJ. The noisemakers would go for Gucci. The core lyric buffs would select Jadakiss. The punchline lovers would fall head over heels with "There is No Competition 2" which is my personal favourite. However, I doff my hat to "No Celings" which is the reason why the little respect I have for Wayne is existent. I havent listened to Jeezy's mixtape so pardon my not mentioning it.
Who's Got Next Award
Verdict: With all due respect, if J Cole does not win I
might jump off a bridge would be appalled . Wiz Khalifa is clearly on a high and a lot of good stuff has been said about Jay Electronica but those guys have not had the impact J Cole has had on Hip Hop. His mixtape "The Warm Up" was the defining factor in influencing my belief that Hip Hop is at it's healthiest in a while. J Cole is the best rapper (Yep, better than Drake, Wale and Co) of the past two years. + He produces his own stuff and has held his head alongside the likes of Jay Z, Mos Def, Talib Kwali and bodied his peers like Wale (Beautiful Bliss) and Jay Electronica on the songs they have featured on. Also, remember that he's got a College degree suggesting he is in Hip Hop for the love of it. I look forward to copping his debut album. If anyone shall be the 'Nas'(best rapper of his generation, lyrics wise) of this generation, J Cole is your man.
Note: I didn't go in on all the categories. 'People's Champ' which is equivalent to Viewer's Choice and 'Guerilla Video of the Year' which I was unsure of.
Also, a list of 20 MC's deserving of the title 'Hottest Breakthrough MC's ' was released with people voting a top 5 and a winner to be chosen from the top 5. The 5 have been unveiled and they include:
Of the 20, I was really passionate about J Cole, Big Sean and Diggy Simmons making the list. Unfortunately, Big Sean didn't make it. I really want J Cole to win but I think it would probably end up with Nicki. She's resurrected the female influence in Hip Hop and has gotten co signs from the likes of Robin Thicke, Jay Z, Ludacris, Diddy, Jadakiss, Kanye West and Queen Latifah. I'm not really a big fan but her
hard work appeal to boy's senses is there for all to see and recognise. In other words, I respect her hustle and won't be surprised if she wins.
